Geostorm

Rating:  ⭐ Bechdal Test: Pass Summary: In order to combat the increasing threat of climate change scientists created 'Dutch Boy'. A system which can control the weather using an array of satellites orbiting above the earth. This works perfectly for a while but, predictably, starts malfunctioning. Isolated satellites start causing death and destruction at specific points across the globe. Jake Lawson (Gerard Butler), the man who designed the system, must journey back into space to the central hub at the International Space Station to understand why this has happened and fix it. Was it a design fault, or is this something much worse? Review: Without a doubt the worst film of 2017 was The Emoji Movie but this film is an excellent contender for number 2. What a pile of pointless rubbish. This film annoyed and bored me for so many reasons and it started very early on; at the beginning of the film a voice over describes why 'Dutch Boy' was created. It expla

Love, Simon

Rating:  ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Bechdal Test: Pass Summary: Simon has had a very normal life, a stable family and good friends but he has one big secret, he is gay. He has kept this secret from everyone and lives in fear that one day his friends and family will find out. When another pupil at Simon's school finds out Simon's secret he is forced to go to great lengths to keep it from getting out and changing his life forever.  Review: Firstly, I was thrilled to see a teen blockbuster with a gay protagonist. This should have happened many years ago but progress towards equality should always be applauded. However I was also aware that this meant that there was a great deal of expectation around this film and I was concerned that it may buckle under the pressure. I am pleased to say that it was able to hold its own. I had laughed a lot at the trailer for this film and assumed that, as with many films, all the best jokes would be in the trailer. I'm glad to say that

A Quiet Place

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Bechdal Test: Pass Summary: In the near future in a post-apocalyptic world monsters hunt humans. They are blind, relying solely on sound to find their prey. Therefore, to survive, people must live in silence. The film follows the lives of a family trying to survive in this terrifying world. Review: I was very excited to see this film and booked tickets as early as possible. I am a huge fan of John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, who play the two leads, and was particularly interested to see how John Krasinki would do as a director. I am pleased to say I thought the film was a triumph. Firstly, the performances were excellent all round but a special mention has to go to Emily Blunt. Her performance is incredible, she is able to convey so many emotions using only her eyes this makes for a deeply moving and completely captivating performance. Millicent Simmonds is also outstanding, I hadn't seen her on screen before and her ability

The Post

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Bechdal Test: Pass Recommend to a friend? Yes Summary:  It's 1971 and Katherine Graham (Meryl Streep) has inherited The Washington Post from her husband after his death. The is the first female publisher of a large American newspaper and almost all of the men around her believe she is incapable of successfully filling this position. Soon after taking this position The New York Time publishes top secret government documents which show how the government had been lying to the people of America about the Vietnam War. The staff as the Washington Post, lead by Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks) have to race to find the documents and navigate the legal complications of publishing when the president will do all in his power to stop the press publishing. Review: The post is a very special and unusual film. This is a film which mainly involves people in rooms talking and there are essentially no action scenes and yet I found I was on the edge of my seat for much of it. I cri

Introduction to my film review blog

Hi, I am an aspiring film critic and will be using this blog to share my reviews of the latest films. Each review will have a rating out of five stars. However, I find this a rather blunt tool to measure a film by so each review will also have a 'recommend to a friend' section where I will outline if I would suggest someone else should watch this film. Every review will also let the reader know if this film passed The Bechdal Test. A film passes the test if it has two named female characters, if two or more women have a conversation and if the conversation is not about men (for more information you can check out this website https://bechdeltest.com/). If a film fails the Bechnal Test it does not necessarily mean that it is a misogynist film however I think it is something that is worth baring in mind. For so many years women have been overlooked in the film industry and it is always work keeping an eye on women's position within the industry. I hope you enjoy my rev
